EASTER EGGS
After last years success we have again sourced these great hand painted eggs from Germany.
They are real eggs that have been ‘blown’, cleaned and refilled with a wonderful Belgianpraline.
On a warm day put in the fridge/freezer for a short time and then crack it open on the bench as you would a hard boiled egg. $4.95 each or $49.95 for a carton of 12.

TOJIRO KNIVES
Following on from the great man himself – Heston Blumenthal - and his fleeting visit to Sydney, it’s a timely reminder that his favourite knife is the Japanese brand Tojiro. Well balanced so it feels like an extension to your arm and with an edge that could slice soft tomatoes or week old bread.
We stock the full range of 3 layer high carbon DP series as well as the 63 layer Damascus Tojiro knives
All our knives – Shun, Tojiro, Wusthof,Henckels, Kyocera, Ivo, Victorinox, Dexter, Geisser – are in stock and you are welcome to use our demo knives to test them on whatever we have lying around in the kitchen! All come with a year’s free knife sharpening.

EDGEWARE MANDOLINS
The best value mandoline around, an absolute gem to use and clean. Built for single hand use and easy thickness adjustment. German steel V blade plus additional blades for julienne or waffle cuts.
Solid cast aluminium frame with effective non-slip feet and 6 pronged safety grip. Great for even consistent slicing especially the harder vegetables such as potatoes or fennel.
Come and use our demo mandolins (we also have the best selling Mastrad and Benriners) to see for yourself how easy they are to use.

TALKING OF KITCHEN MUST HAVES...
...did you see the Good Weekend section in Sydney Morning Herald a couple of Saturdays ago (they had a cover shot of Rachael Ray, the world’s most successful tv cook).
Inside there was an article about favourite gadgets and how they have changed over the years.
50’s – teasmades, pressure cookers, rice cookers, Mixmaster, egg poachers
60’s – ice crushers, combi can openers, ice cream makers
70’s – fondue sets, crock pot, electric carving knife
80’s – microwave ovens, salad spinners, stick blenders, food processors
90’s – Philippe Starck ‘juicy’, George Forman Grill, Global knives, bread makers
00’s – Kitchen Aid, domestic blowtorches, domestic sous vide baths
So, the only good things in the 70’s was the music and everyone knows the 90’s are overrated.
I love my pressure cooker, salad spinner, Shun knife and Kitchen Aid mixer and an old copy of Mrs Beeton from the 20’s – not sure what this proves other than you can never have enough kitchen cupboards and treat the belowstairs staff well.
The celebrity chefs where asked their favourites:
- Neil Perry – Bamix hand blender (nice one Neil).
- Karen Martini – mortar and pestles (she has 8! )
- Bill Granger – mandolin (we love you Bill)
- Margaret Fulton – Victorinox serrated knives (at $6 what’s not to like and they last forever)

FOODIE NEWS
“Less salt more flavour” seems to be the call from restaurants as consumers become more conscious of the high levels of salt in their diet and particularly from prepared foods.
We are now the distributors for Cornish Sea Salt which is similar in style and taste to the French Fleur du sel. A good strong white colour ( the French can be very off putting as it’s often grey in colour) and because it’s very ‘salty’ you use a lot less, hence the health benefits.
Chef and the Cook dips a finger into social media. Help us build our online community, follow us on Twitter and get kitchen notes straight from the Twitterverse.
